Application foal/youngstock registration

Registering an Irish Draught or Irish Draught Sport Horse

Registering a horse with IDHSC is a 2-step process.

Step 1 requires all the administrative preparation for the registration office to provide the forms for Step 2 (identification and DNA).

Step 2 requires a veterinarian or registered veterinary technologist to complete the forms, collect the DNA hair sample, and sign. Step 2 costs are between the applicant and their chosen veterinary clinic, and are in addition to the application fees.

This application is for Step 1.

To submit this application the applicant needs to include:

  1. Proof of foal/youngstock parentage

    1. sire's stallion certificate.

    2. a copy of dam's registration papers.

    3. If sire or dam are not registered/do not have proof of parentage contact: registrar.idhsc@gmail.com before proceeding.

  2. Proof of membership (purchase membership if not a member)

  3. Photos of the horse applicant is registering:

    1. Four colour photographs of which show

      a. each side of the horse – left and right “conformation shot” – close enough that the horse fills the frame

      b. a straight-on, shot of front of the horse from tips of ears to bottom of front feet; and

      c. the full hindquarters and legs (hold the tail to one side so the lower legs are clearly visible.)

The photographs will be placed in the passport. Their purpose is to SHOW THE MARKINGS so please ensure that they are close, clear, well-lit and the horse is fully visible within the frame.

  4. Step 1 Fee list:

Before November 1 of the year of birth...$170

After November 1 of year of birth............$235

DNA testing for sire or dam......................$75

Membership..............................................$45

Registration fees include the cost of DNA analysis for parentage verification of the foal. The DNA testing fee for sire or dam is for horses that have not had DNA testing done or DNA is not available to the registry. Note; IDHSC requires DNA from both sire and dam to register a horse.

Step 2 - Veterinarian or Registered Veterinary Technologist Identification Certificate, Tissue Sample Extraction Certification and DNA Sample Collection

Once this application is submitted the Registration Office will send you a customized Identification Certificate (marking diagram), Tissue Sample Extraction Certificate and DNA sample form for pulled hair from your horse. You will need to make and appointment with your Veterinary Clinic to complete this stage. Your Veterinary Clinic will provide you with their rates for either your veterinarian or a registered veterinary technologist to complete the following:

  1. The Identification Certificate fully completed and signed by a veterinarian. You will need a red pen to show any white markings. If the horse does not have markings on a particular body area, please put “None” in the space for that area. Please do not leave fields blank unless they are not required, eg, Height for a foal.

  2. The completed Tissue Sample Extraction Certificate signed by a veterinarian certifying that he/she extracted the hair sample to be used for the horse’s parentage verification. A certificate confirming the parentage must be received by the Society from the testing lab before a registration certificate will be issued.

  3. A hair sample for the horse taped to the DNA Sample Form for Pulled Hair and placed into a new envelope by itself. Note: For parentage to be verified, the DNA profiles of both the sire and the dam must be on file at the lab. This will be checked when the registration application first arrives at the Registration Office.
